(Dubai): Emirates Environmental Group organised the 20th cycle of the annual Inter School Environmental Public Speaking Competition on 9th and 10th November 2020. Under the theme “Assert Your Speech for Green Outreach”, EEG succeeded in transforming the physical competition experience into a virtual one. Over 350 participants, comprising of 56 teams, in the course of two days, came together from various government and private schools across all the Emirates, all united with their passion for Environmental advocacy and Climate action.
On the first day of the event, sub-senior students between the ages of 13 and 15 discussed two topics, “Biodiversity Restoration, Who’s Responsibility?” And “Sustainable Tourism is a Responsible Tourism: Our Own English High School, Sharjah won in first topic and Leaders Private School, Sharjah was the winner in the second topic.
The second day was for the senior category of students in the age bracket of 16-18. Dubai National School, Al Barsha was crowned the winner for the topic “The 6th Mass Extinction Is it Upon Us?” and Delhi Private School, Sharjah was the winner for the last topic, “Resource Efficiency and Climate Change: Time for Action”.
The topics chosen for the competition were designed to encompass the UN SDGs 4, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 focusing on Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and production, Climate Action, and Life on Land and below water and Effective partnerships. The discussions and presentations provided by the students reflected the immense efforts invested in research and the sense of environmental awareness exhibited by the participating teams.
Ms. Habiba Al Marashi, Co-founder and Chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group shared her delight and said: “This year we were truly inspired by the commitment and the creativity of the students coming from diverse backgrounds, all united with their passion for sustainability. I strongly believe that these future leaders will play a pivotal role in sensitizing adults on the need to adopt sustainable lifestyles, and be the drivers of the futuristic change needed. For two – decades EEG has created the settings to engage the students by recognising their role in fighting global pressing issues. Although the 20th cycle of the competition was conducted via a virtual platform, the students continued to share their innovative ideas to tackle the issues that are pertinent to today’s world. I thank our Strategic Educational Partner, Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) for their continuous support to EEG’s Educational Programmes”

The competition was deliberately organised in the past years to coincide with Earth day celebrations in April, aiming to inspire actions towards environment conservation, but due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, EEG had to postpone it to take place in November.
Four distinguished experts in the field representing the academic and corporate sectors honoured the all-inclusive, bilingual programme as members of the jury.
The opening and closing ceremonies in both days witnessed five special performances from the participating students, who shared some uplifting songs aligned with the themes of the 20th cycle of the Inter-School Environmental Public Speaking Competition.
