DUBAI, 30 November 2021 – The Barbados Pavilion commemorated its 55th Independence Day at Expo 2020 Dubai’s Alkebulan African Dining Hall today (30 November) in the presence of His Excellency Gabriel Abed, Barbados Ambassador to the UAE, as the country became the youngest republic in the world.
HE Gabriel Abed said: “We stand today at an intersection between our colonial past and our self-sovereign future. Today marks not just Barbados’s 55th independence day, but it marks the first day of our nation becoming the youngest republic in the world. This moment is important to us, because it is at this point that we regain the full control of our identity, our future and our freedom. We are now truly craftsmen and craftswomen of our fate.
“To our Barbadian diaspora, we all pledge to give credit to our nation wherever we go, and today we are standing in the United Arab Emirates. We stand tall. We stand proudly. We stand visible for the whole world to see.”
The Barbados Pavilion invited Expo visitors to dress in blue and gold – the country’s national colours – and join the festivities at the world’s first African dining hall.
The pavilion, located in Mobility District, allows visitors to experience Barbadian culture through authentic storytelling and take in the sights and sounds of the country.
